25 Years of Continuous Improvement

Gel Kayano is the flagship model of Asics designed for protection and stability, providing support for moderate to severe overpronators, as well as superb cushioning and responsiveness at the same time. This year celebrates the 25th anniversary after first launch of this model in 1993, which means 25 iterations of continuous improvement.

A model going through 25 years is remarkable in the market. In this review I will show you the reasons why Gel-Kayano continues to stay as the “top of the line” shoe for distance running.

Upper of Asics Gel-Kayano 25

The upper of the shoe is the top portion to hold your foot in place and provide comfort during running. In Asics Gel-Kayano 25, a new 2 layer Jacquard mesh is used to provide extra breathability and enhanced fitting while remaining sturdy and comfortable. The new material and design keeps your feet cool and dry during the run.

Toe box of Gel Kayano 25 is enlarged as compared with previous version, offering more room for your toes and helps to avoid blister.

A new heel piece with Asics’ Metaclutch technology is used for better heel-holding to ensure the heel stays in place and improve comfort on the ride.

The tongue and heel collar are well-padded with plush feeling, delivering extra comfort to the run.

The insole Ortholite X-40 sockliner is made of anti-bacterial material which is detachable for cleaning, offering extra comfort and cushioning.

Midsole of Asics Gel-Kayano 25

A new material Flytefoam Propel is used in midsole of forefoot, provides a spring-like effect with enhanced responsiveness in toe-off, which gives a smooth and efficient transition of gait cycle during the run.

As for the midsole of rearfoot, a lightweight and softer material Flytefoam Lyte is used, offering better cushioning, support and energy return.

Full length Gel cushioning is used in both rearfoot and forefoot in Gel-Kayano 25, which attenuate the shock to your body during landing. The Gel cushioning in rearfoot is visible while that for forefoot is not visible.

Extra stability for pronators is provided with Medial support system, and Impact Guidance System (IGS) delivers a smooth and balanced heel to toe transition.

Outsole of Asics Gel-Kayano 25

Asics High Abrasion Rubber (AHAR) is used in the heel offering extra durability, while a softer blown rubber in the forefoot provides better response for the heel to toe cycle.

Asics Gel-Kayano 25 is an iconic running shoe for daily training as well as long runs, with technologically constructed in providing stability, support, cushioning and comfort, without compromising durability.

A number of improved features is included in this model, especially to the upper and midsole.

A new 2 layer Jacquard mesh is used in upper to improve breathability and comfort, with Metaclutch heel-holding offering extra support to keep your heel in space during running.

A combination of two types of Flytefoam of different density used in midsole offering increased stability and responsiveness to toe-off.

Coupled with Asics unique Gel cushioning in rearfoot and forefoot, Impact Guidance System and Medial Support System, you are provided with superb support and cushioning, making you less tiring as well as reduced risks of injury, while, at the same time, delivering extra responsiveness for a smooth and balanced transition from heel to toe in the running gait cycle.

If you are looking for a pair of all around running shoes that last long for both daily training and your race, and have the budget to savor the experience of top-tier running shoes in the market, I would strongly recommend you to go for Asics Gel-Kayano 25.

  1. Hello Brian, nice review. I am aware of the Asics brand as I am a sneaker collector. I have never ran a marathon before, but I do plan to in the near future. These would be perfect for me. Thanks again, and I wish you nothing but success!!!

  2. Hey, I’m Asics fan and used to run with GT 2000-3 which was bought around 2 years ago. Love Kayano but too pricey. Do you have review on latest GT 2000?

    • Hey,

      Thanks for dropping by.

Excited you a runner and a fan of Asics. I’m too.
GT 2000 is a stability shoe some runners consider as a low cost version of Kayano. The latest version is GT 2000-6. I will have a review on it in early Sep. Stay tuned!

      Best wishes.
